Jon Stevenson paints mostly using oils, in medium to large format. He paints abstractly and experimentally, painting layers on layers, with different thickness and wetness of paint. Whilst the work is abstract, it also contains figurative components. He has an interest in the New York School of abstract expressionists, and this influences his approach to painting.
Jon is interested in how the different elements of a painting interact and create a sense of dynamic space. He paints quickly, sometimes with high energy, then undertakes a series of steps of deleting, editing and refining. In the final painting, he often hopes to capture a series of ‘moments’; movement, colour and energy are important components of the final output. He treats the canvas as an ongoing problem with many possible solutions.
