'Zones of Dis/comfort' is a presentation of new work by Roanna Wells. These large, circular paintings explore the outer parameters of her practice and tread new ground, while being careful not to stray too far from the distinctive qualities that make Roanna's work so recognisable. The body of work was mostly produced during a five-week residency in the gallery at Exchange Place Studios.
The works are unified by size, style and the circular motif, a decision which allowed Roanna to kickstart the making process and begin experimenting. This has included playing freely with colours and brush-size, as well as disrupting the linear mark-making with stylised 'glitches'. Each of the finished pieces were then rotated 180 degrees and displayed upside-down, adding unexpected dimensions to the work beyond Roanna's control.
Funded by Sheffield Culture Consortium's Freelance Arts & Culture Fund and hosted by Yorkshire Artspace, the residency has given Roanna space to think and the opportunity to strengthen her artistic voice. The presentation will therefore be the focus of a number of crit sessions and networking visits, forging new relationships with galleries that will help Roanna progress to the next stage of her career.
