This Stuff Matters are four established women sculptors: Alexandra Harley, Sheila Vollmer, Jill Gibson, and Yorkshire Artspace member Gillian Brent. For one weekend only, they present 'We Are Still Here', a pop-up exhibition and discussion platform in our Project Space at Exchange Place Studios.
All four sculptors, who have been working and exhibiting since the 1980s, feel that women bring a different perspective to abstract sculpture that should be celebrated. Despite this, the group still find that sculpture is an arena mostly dominated by men even today. Their group, formed in 2019, has therefore become a valuable source of inspiration, motivation and peer support.
This pop-up exhibition will showcase abstract sculptures from all four artists, as well as creating a space for discussion around what it means to be a woman making abstract sculpture in 2021. This discussion will be chaired by Meghan Goodeve, a curator and educator with ten years’ experience in integrated programming, who is currently Programme Leader for the Freelands Artist Programme as well as being a Trustee for Yorkshire Artpace.
The talk, which members of the public are invited to attend and take part in, will begin at 2:00pm on Saturday 16th October and be followed by an informal drinks reception, providing a chance to take in the exhibition and chat to the artists. Tickets are free but numbers are limited; please book via Eventbrite here.
