Thursday, Friday & Saturday
11am - 4pm

Emerging triumphantly from the disruption of the past year, Hanne Westergaard presents a major exhibition of ceramics in our Persistence Works gallery. All work in the exhibition is for sale.

Urban Joy showcases new work inspired by the history and landscape of Sheffield and its surrounding countryside. Originally planned to coincide with her 80th birthday, the show also offers a glimpse into Westergaard’s past and celebrates a relationship with clay spanning more than 50 years.

As part of her exploration of the urban environment, Westergaard has discovered joy and hidden beauty in a variety of sources, from unusually shaped seed pods to drain covers beneath our feet. She is fascinated by the process of adapting these forms to the chosen material, which often changes them completely.

These interests are reflected in the new slipcast work she has produced in stoneware and porcelain, which aim to draw attention to parts of the city which may often be overlooked or taken for granted. It is in finding these points of inspiration (and in the process of transforming them into ceramic objects) that Westergaard finds her ‘urban joy’.
