Testing Ground is a new micro-residency at Exchange Place Studios, intended to provide an intensive period of creative experimentation for an artist based in Sheffield. Our first Testing Ground artist-in-residence is Bethan Maddocks, an artist who works with archives, communities and organisations to collect stories and make socially engaged, site-specific artwork.
Throughout September and October, the gallery will be used as a working studio space for Bethan to explore light, shadow, paper and storytelling. She will create a series of hanging papercut artworks and kinetic paper sculptures, both inspired by celestial bodies.
The works she is developing during the residency reference her ongoing research into labour, nature, and access to land. After the residency, the work will culminate in two exhibitions at Northumberland National Park and at a large heritage venue in the region (to be announced late September).
For Castlegate Festival 2023, join Bethan to make your own pop-up paper scene that explores the changing face of Castlegate and Sheffield past, present and imagined. Free and suitable for all children. All materials provided.

Drop in for an opportunity to meet Bethan and talk about her work. As well as a chance to glimpse at what she's working on, there is also research material on display for you to explore Bethan's influences.

An opportunity to see parts of the work Bethan has developed during the residency, ahead of its exhibition elsewhere! On Friday 20th October, join us for a closing celebration 5-7pm.
