About the space

Studio 5.18 is on the top floor of Exchange Place Studios, a 1930s department store in Castlegate that we converted to studios in 2013. The building is home to a wide range of creative practices including painters, illustrators, printmakers, ceramicists, leather and textileworkers, jewellers, and contemporary visual artists. On the ground floor is Carousel Print Studio, Clay Space, and a project space that accommodates our Testing Ground residency programme and our monthly crit group.

The building has 24/7 access via steps, and has flat access at street level during regular office hours of Tuesday - Thursday, 10am - 4pm. There is a secure internal bike store, a communal kitchen, and shared washrooms on each floor for cleaning equipment. There is a working lift, heating in the colder months, and free Wi-Fi suitable for light browsing.

Studio 5.18 is a small studio with one east-facing window, with views overlooking Park Hill and Victoria Quays. It is a light and airy space, with internal glazing into the corridor. It therefore may not be suitable for those who need complete privacy when working. One of the internal walls is metal, meaning it cannot be drilled into, however it is magnetic. Floor 5 is a busy floor, primarily home to painters, printmakers and visual artists, as well as a milliner and a dressmaker.

Please note: Exchange Place Studios is not equipped with extraction. We are therefore unable to accommodate practices that produce excessive dust, including but not limited to ceramics and woodwork. Spray paints and other aersols are not permitted indoors at Exchange Place Studios. Additionally, we cannot accommodate kilns or other hot works above the Ground Floor.

Charges per month (2024/25)*

Approximate space charge per month: £189.74* (inc. all utilities)
We require payment of 1 month's rent as a refundable deposit prior to moving in.
All charges must be paid by standing order.
The notice period to leave a studio is 8 weeks.

*All charges are due to increase 1 April annually.
