Two silversmiths, Daisy Lee-Overton and Francisca Onumah from the Starter Studio programme here at Yorkshire Artspace were selected for the Precious Little Gems Commission, the outcomes of which are now on display at the Millenium Gallery.
Join us at the Millenium Gallery to hear the makers discuss their journey into the craft, and the inspirations for their work, including details of the making process.
Precious Little Gems is an annual opportunity sponsored by Sheffield Assay Office for two early career silversmiths to bring to life one of their own designs. Daisy, who designed a gin chalice for the commission says:
'I am really excited to have been awarded the Precious Little Gems commission as it is an excellent opportunity for me to develop my style on a larger scale. Referring to the natural world for inspiration I aim to create a stunning and decorative piece of contemporary silverware for the table.'
And Francisca was also delighted to be taking part:
"I'm so pleased to be awarded the 'Precious Little Gems' commission, every year the work that's produced is challenging and innovative. I'm currently working to create a unique water jug which will sit beautifully alongside two small drinking cups, all of which capture my distinctive metalsmithing style and concepts. It's a great opportunity to further my design and making skills, I'm excited to create this piece that will be part of the Precious Little Gems archive."
