Yorkshire Artspace is pleased to announce this residency opportunity to complement the opening of Exchange Place Studios and celebrate our new presence in the Castlegate area of Sheffield city centre. This residency is a partnership between Yorkshire Artspace and the University of Sheffield through their Engaged University Programme. It is part of a wider programme of cultural activities and events focused on Castlegate over the next 2 years. This presents an opportunity to look intensively and creatively at the Castlegate area at a time of flux. To research, explore and create work in response to this context that enables people to actively engage, interact or participate.
The residency can span an 8 month period April-Nov 2015 (30 day min.)
We anticipate that the artist would locate themselves/their work very much within the public realm and that they/their work has a visible ‘on-street’ presence thereby helping to ‘shine a light’ on Castlegate.
We are looking for an artist who is a good connector, who uses their practice to engage a public, who can evidence how they will communicate with the public.
This opportunity is open to visual artists and we are especially keen to hear from those who have a performative/site-specific/relational slant to their practice or those who might consider themselves as socially engaged, who co-produce or work collaboratively. As such expectations for any artworks are open-ended depending on the discipline but we are equally interested in the process and activities/events which encourage engagement.
The resident artist is required to have a key presence during the Castlegate Vibrancy Event (June) - and to share ideas/work generated during the residency at Yorkshire Artspace Open Studios (Nov) at the end of the residency period.
We ask resident artists to complete a journal documenting their time and their project, uploading images as they go. You can see our previous resident artists, Emilie Taylor's work unfold throughout her project here.
