Andy Jackson presents New Dawns / Last Year, an exhibition of paintings at Exchange Place Studios. Responding to fly-posters found in the streets of Sheffield during the Covid pandemic in 2020, this new work challenges notions of authorship and positions the posters as sites for painterly investigation.
Observing the source material in new ways, small details in the posters are highlighted and given new significance. In the resulting paintings, ink-drips, weathering and marks of vandalism are as important as the messaging itself.
Messages are playfully layered by the artist, appropriating slogans and drawing attention to intruding slap-tags and scrawled graffiti. In doing so, he reveals a multitude of disparate voices and questions how they co-exist in the public domain.
The resulting works sit somewhere between their source and new forms of artistic communication. The artist welcomes interrogation of the process: does the act of painting add to or subtract from the source material? And does it amplify or subdue the voice of the original author?
