The Kiln Yard is a brand-new gas kiln facility based at our Persistence Works studio complex in the heart of Sheffield. Featuring two gas-fired kilns, a sheltered outdoor workspace and garden, the facilities are available to hire by professional ceramicists. Firings are supported by our team of dedicated Kiln Technicians to ensure safe and knowledgeable operation of the kilns.
For more information, or to join our Kiln Yard mailing list, please contact Rachael Dodd: rachael@artspace.org.uk
Kilns are hired on a whole kiln only basis, and firings managed by our Kiln Technicians including loading, firing and unpacking all you have to do is drop-off items to be fired and collect them when they're done.
If you require less space then shared firings can be accommodated - all you need to do is find other fellow potters to share the kiln with you and apply to hire as a group. One named person will need to apply on behalf of the group and is responsible for payment in full. Please download and read our Hire Agreement and Hire Rates documents fully before applying to hire.
The kilns are available for supported firings throughout the year. The whole firing cycle typically takes five days, and the usual schedule for firings will involve packing on Monday, firing on Tuesday, cooling over Wednesday/Thursday, and unpacking on Friday. Our current dates for supported firings in 2023 are as follows:
If the above dates dates do not fit with your requirements, please get in touch via kilnyard@artspace.org.uk before making your booking, to see if we can accommodate an alternative date for you.
To apply for a firing, please complete the Kiln Yard Booking Form. You must read the Hire Agreement and Hire Rates documents carefully before submitting your booking. One of our Kiln Yard team will respond as soon as possible to confirm your booking.
If you're interested in finding out more about the Kiln Yard, come along to one of our free open days. The open days are a great way to check out the kilns, meet the staff and chat to the technicians. As well as an opportunity to ask any burning questions, there will also be raku firings and throwing demos. Our next open days are:
