Introducing Meghan Downs

How did you hear about the Starter Studio Programme?

Whilst I was exhibiting a selection of ceramic vessels at New Designers, I spoke to the current members of the programme about my work and they then began to explain where they were currently based and what the programme did, giving me some information to look at after the exhibition.

What made you want to apply?

After speaking to the Starter Studio members at New Designers and researching further into the scheme, I thought this would be a fantastic way of being able to continue on with my ceramic collection after University, as not only would I have a support network around me but it is also a lot more affordable than going it alone. I am extremely lucky to be given the chance to take part in such a fantastic opportunity like this!

Can you describe your practice?

My work aims to use traditional ceramic techniques to achieve a modern and fresh outcome, highly focusing on layering surface texture with decoration and also through my use of colour. The inspiration behind my work comes directly from architecture, from the drawings I created during a trip to Italy of the traditional street scenes, to the modern architecture that inspired the form of my work. All aspects are hand-built in Earthenware clay, and I use a mixture of coloured slips, underglazes and ceramic transfers to achieve my surface decoration. I also want to highlight that each piece I make is unique, so no two will be the same.

Where can people see your work?

I should hopefully have a small collection of work at Yorkshire Artspace Open Studios in November, as well as an upcoming exhibition at the Bevere Gallery, Worcester in January. I also have a website where people can see all of my previous work and get in contact with me if required.
