In September 2015 Florence Carter completed the Starter Studio Programme for Designer Silversmiths and Jewellers. Whilst on the programme, Florence was selected to design the Ladbrokes St Leger Trophy commissioned by Doncaster Racecourse and Sheffield Hallam University.
There are two parts to the St Ledger Trophy; a permanent outer dish and a central rose bowl which is re-designed each year and gifted to the winner of the St Ledger horse race.
For the 2015 Winner’s Centre, Florence created a minimalist representation of the Yorkshire Rose with three abstract crowns around the outside.
I felt very privileged to have been chosen to make the trophy, and being the youngest to do it so far I enjoyed the challenge of making such an important and widely recognised piece. Inspiration came from the Yorkshire Rose and the British Triple Crown; three horse races of which the St Ledger is the ultimate race. Some parts of the trophy were scored and folded; a technique I use a lot. Photo etching was also used and parts of the trophy are gold plated.
Here at Yorkshire Artspace we offer two Starter Studio programmes: one for Silversmiths & Jewellers and one for Ceramicists. Both programmes offer access to shared workspace and equipment, technical and mentor support, business advice, an annual commission plus occasional exhibition opportunities.
