In a collaboration between Sheffield Institute of Arts and Yorkshire Artspace the Stars on Starting Out series will be taking place from April to December 2018 and will feature the great and the good from the creative sector - from fine art, design and contemporary craft to fashion and film.
Jim Herrington is a photographer whose portraits of celebrities including Benny Goodman, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, Cormac McCarthy, Morgan Freeman and Dolly Parton have appeared on the pages of Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, Outside and Men's Journal as well as on scores of album covers for more than three decades. He has photographed international ad campaigns for clients such as Thule, Trek Bikes, Gibson Guitars and Wild Turkey Bourbon.
We warmly welcome Jim as he looks back on a long career of photographing artists, writers, musicians and movie stars. Jim has recently completed an epic 20 year programme to document rock stars of a very different type: the climbers who forged the history of climbing and mountaineering from the 1920s to the 1970s. This started out as a personal project and has evolved into an award winning book that stands as a record of the history of a golden era.
We will be asking Jim how he made his start as a photographer. He will be offering his perspective on how the business has changed over the length of his career and what has sustained him creatively throughout his working life.
