Director's News

Our e-newsletter is a great way to let you know about Yorkshire Artspace events and studio developments but we have yet to use it fully to express the impact that our individual artists and makers have. In 2008/09 there were over two million visitors to exhibitions of our studio holders’ work from Glasgow to Japan. They delivered 1,656 days of education, outreach and life-long learning reaching almost eight thousand, mostly local, people. Our artists' work was profiled extensively locally but also nationally on Radio 4, in the Guardian, the Independent and the Financial Times, on the bbcnews website and on BBC1 and STV, raising the profile of Sheffield as a culturally productive city.
These statistics come from our first Public Benefit Survey for ten years, the results of which have also led to some surprising revelations about working as a professional artist. Our artists are at all stages of their careers and by increasing the number of studios we are able to offer, 42% of them established their professional careers within the last ten years. 50% spend more than 30 hours per week in the studio suggesting that making art is their main profession. And in answer to the question 'Why do artists need studios?' the majority identified being part of a network of artists, having time and space to work, ability to do larger scale work than could be done at home, peer support, links to work opportunities, help with marketing and the ability to share materials and equipment.
These impressive statistics support our ambition to contribute to the regeneration of Sheffield's neighbourhoods, as well as the city centre, by building creative communities at their hearts.
