Director's News
After a spectacularly busy November and December we have had a good long rest and are now looking forward to another eventful year.
If your New Year’s resolution was to further your professional development (as well as all the pro-exercise and anti-vice related stuff) a really good start would be to talk to Mir or Rachael as part of our free 1-2-1 advice sessions or to join us for one of the Starting Out programme sessions starting again on 17th January.
We also still have available some of the totally beautiful studios at Knutton Road where our newest creative community now numbers 5. Interest in our most northerly studio complex was fanned by our symposium ‘Art in a Social Context’ that took place there in December and attracted delegates from across the country. The bread provided by a local baker was unforgettable and the full audio transcript of this event will be posted on the website by the end of the month.
Finally, it’s always nice to have some new (to us) artists to meet, and we look forward to working with two new artists in residence: Edith Garcia our second artist in residence at Manor Oaks Studios and Ania Bas our third artists residency in Parson Cross and Knutton Road Studios.
Happy New Year! Keep liking and following us on Facebook and Twitter this year - your comments are always welcome.
Kate, Director Yorkshire Artspace

Residencies in Parson Cross - updates

Ania Bas @ Knutton Road Studios
Ania is commencing her 2012 residency in Parson Cross in earnest on the afternoon of 19th January. Ania will be meeting and talking to people at SOAR Works about the new Knutton Road Studios and the role they could play within the neighbourhood and community of Parson Cross. This initial discussion will help inform Ania and shape the direction of the residency over the coming year. There will be many more opportunities in 2012 to join in. Ania is always keen to hear from people and is happy to be contacted on aniabas@gmail.com
Ania is an artist and developer of art projects who, in her own words, 'works with people rather than canvas' in various contexts, in open and enclosed spaces, with businesses and the streets. Ania is interested in people, process based practices and creating experimental art spaces and art sites all of which and more we hope she will bring to Parson Cross. "Families are for life, not just for Christmas. Love them or loathe them, we can’t help but be deeply shaped by the people closest to us". This new exhibition brings together both historic and contemporary art to illustrate the changing portrayal of family in Britain over the centuries. From formal portraits of powerful families, long before the dawn of photography, to the self-expression of more recent times, The Family in British Art will show that images inspired by our families have always been some of our most revealing. The exhibition features paintings, photography, film and sculpture from a host of great names of British art, including Thomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, David Hockney, Martin Parr, Tracey Emin and Rachel Whiteread. The Family in British Art was created by Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service as part of the The Great British Art Debate – a partnership project between Tate Britain, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service and Museums Sheffield. If you like to attend, please RSVP to Chris Harvey or 0114 278 2664. The Family in British Art continues until 29 April 2012
